What to expect
Starting counselling can feel daunting. Here's what happens.
Choosing a counsellor can feel overwhelming. I know, I've been there myself. Knowing what to expect can make that first step a little easier, so here's how working together usually goes.

Your first steps
A free 15-minute chat
By phone or video. Tell me a little about what's brought you here, ask anything you like, and see whether we feel like a good fit. There's no pressure and no obligation.
Your first session
We'll get to know each other, go through the counselling agreement, and talk about what you'd like from counselling. You don't need to share more than feels comfortable.
Regular sessions
60-minute sessions, usually weekly at a regular time, online or in person. You don't need a plan or all the answers. We'll figure things out together.
Reviewing together
Counselling can be short or longer term. We'll check in regularly about what's helping and adapt as your needs change.
Sessions shaped around you
I work in a neurodiversity-affirming way. That means adapting therapy to suit you, rather than expecting you to fit a particular way of working.
- Move around, sit with a cushion or on the floor, or use fidget toys
- Ask questions at any time, and take breaks whenever you need
- Relaxed, low-demand sessions where humour, sadness and every other feeling are welcome
- I can adjust the lighting and other sensory things in the room
- Online, set up your space however suits you, with blankets, pets, or your camera off
How I work
I'm an integrative counsellor, drawing on person-centred and reflective practice, mindfulness and practical coaching strategies when they fit your needs. I often take a strength-based approach, recognising what's already working and building on your own abilities and resources.
In a session we might talk about your thoughts, feelings, relationships and current challenges, look for patterns, or try practical tools such as clarifying your values or building routines that support your wellbeing. Or we might simply make space for whatever comes up that week. The direction is always shaped by you.
Everything you share is confidential, with a small number of exceptions such as a serious risk of harm or a legal requirement. I'll explain these in our first session, and where it's safe and appropriate I'll always talk to you first.
